The building at 7956 Busche Blvd. looks like a barn. It has steel beams and wood walls from floor to ceiling, and its theme comes from the wild horse herds that live outside Gainesville. The ribbon-cutting is set for 9 a.m. this Thursday, Oct. 8, and the developer's invitation promises goodies and raffles. It also asks guests to "rustle up your cowboy gear."
On its own, Mustang is a pleasant new place to play pickleball or take the grandkids for a swim. Where it sits in the growth plan matters more. The developer calls Mustang "the first of several" recreation projects, and the next ones are already named. Villages-News reports that Pullman is going up a short golf cart ride from Eastport, close to Mustang. Until now, the southern end of The Villages has relied mostly on its flagship spots, the Eastport town square and Olympia Recreation. Mustang starts the smaller, close-to-home layer.
What Opens on Thursday
Mustang is a Village recreation center, the neighborhood-sized kind found all across the older parts of the community. It sits in the Eastport area along Marsh Bend Trail. According to Villages-News.com's Oct. 3 report, here is what residents will find inside and outside:
- Water: a family pool
- Courts: pickleball, tennis, shuffleboard and bocce
- Lawn games and fitness: corn toss and outdoor exercise equipment
- Indoor games: billiards, darts and table shuffleboard
- Gathering space: a pavilion, gathering rooms, a kitchen and a pedestrian path
The developer's March design preview breaks the indoor space down further. It lists a game room, a card room, a warming kitchen and a large meeting room. The designers, Alison & Devon, describe the interior as "rustic and elegant" with a "spirited country feel" as you walk in.
The schedule held. In that March 5 update, the developer said Mustang would be finished in Fall 2026, and the opening landed in the first week of October.
How Mustang Differs From Olympia
Olympia Recreation, at 1210 McPherson Terrace, opened Dec. 11, 2025, and it was built for a different job. It holds the big facilities, the kind people drive across the district to use. Mustang is the one closer to home.
| Olympia Recreation | Mustang Recreation Center | |
|---|---|---|
| Address | 1210 McPherson Terrace | 7956 Busche Blvd. |
| Opened | Dec. 11, 2025 | Scheduled Oct. 8, 2026 |
| Signature features | Farragut Softball Complex, Sophie Doodles Canine Park, The Athletic Club, Summit Rock Climbing Wall | Family pool, card room, game room, warming kitchen, courts for pickleball, tennis, shuffleboard and bocce |
| Design | Olympic-themed art installations, vaulted ceilings | Barn-style building, steel beams, wood walls |
Each center fills gaps the other leaves. Olympia has the softball fields, the dog park and the climbing wall. Mustang has a card room, a family pool and a bocce court close enough for a quick trip after dinner. The developer's profile of the Village of Long Prairie already lists Mustang as a nearby recreation center and highlights its family pool for residents there. No published service boundary assigns Mustang to particular villages, so like other Village recreation centers, it is open to residents generally.
The Rec Centers Planned After Mustang
The developer has named the projects that follow Mustang, and each has its own theme:
- Pullman Village Recreation Center, inspired by train dining cars from the late 1800s
- Rock 'N' Roll Village Recreation Center, built around the legends of music history
Villages-News also lists the Long Prairie Recreation and Postal Center among the buildings going up a short golf cart ride from Eastport, along with Pullman and Mustang. The developer's Long Prairie Cottage Villas page also lists a separate upcoming Long Prairie Recreation Area.
None of these has a published opening date yet. Mustang's opening on schedule is the best guide to how the rest may roll out, but it is only a guide. For now, Pullman, Rock 'N' Roll and the Long Prairie facilities are planned or under construction.
Homes are going up nearby too. Construction at the Village of Green Hill Grove next to Eastport is "progressing rapidly," according to Villages-News, and the neighborhood is planned with walking access to Eastport and all its facilities. More neighbors moving in next to a growing set of small rec centers is the same pattern the older parts of The Villages followed years ago.
Pool and Room Rules
There are no Mustang-specific pool hours or court-booking steps posted yet, so the district-wide rules are the best guide until signs go up on site.
According to the District Government pools page, family pools are open daily from 7:30 a.m. to dusk. They welcome residents and guests of all ages, and guests under 19 must be accompanied by a Villages resident or a guest. That matters if grandkids are visiting over the holidays. Mustang's family pool fits that kind of afternoon better than the adult-only sports pools.
For guest IDs, the District's guest information page notes that its detailed policy is current as of 2009. It is worth calling District Recreation before you plan a visit around those rules.
For renting a room at a recreation center, District Recreation lists [email protected] as its email contact and suggests calling the nearest At Your Service center, where staff can answer questions about use, scheduling and room rates. Outdoor facilities use separate reservation applications, and staff can tell you what is open and when. The large meeting room and the warming kitchen are the spaces most likely to be booked by clubs and groups.
Pairing a Mustang Visit With Eastport
Mustang is a short ride from the Eastport town square, so an afternoon of bocce can turn into an evening on the water.
Along Shooks Alley, storefronts include Mia Sorella, Go Fish and The Villages Logo Store. Go Fish was first announced in August as a clothing and jewelry shop that also carries home goods, books and personal-care products. A pedestrian bridge now crosses the water to Sunset Island. The waterfront stage area looks out over Hotel Eastport and the Welcome Center.
Dining choices are still growing. Peach Valley Café is coming to the corner of Dewey Drive and Eastport Drive. Tacos & Tequila Cantina is under construction right next to Oak & Stone.
Golfers in the area have plenty of choices close by. The developer lists the Bellaire Executive Course in the Eastport area. The Long Prairie profile adds the Woodlands course, the Beautyberry and Honeysuckle executive courses, the Shallow Creek championship course and the Central Lake Golf Academy & Driving Range.
Two Dates for the Calendar
Mustang opens just before the season's first big community events. Halloween Across The Villages is set for Saturday, Oct. 31, at Spanish Springs, Lake Sumter Landing, Eastport and Brownwood. Each location plans its own live entertainment, costume contests and drink specials. On Dec. 1, Light Up The Villages is billed as the community's first-ever tree lighting across all the town squares. More details are still to be announced.
Both events will draw crowds to Eastport. A rec center a short golf cart ride away gives anyone hosting family that night a place to gather beforehand, with a pool for the kids and a card table for everyone else.
If you live near Mustang, the new rec centers rising around Eastport will shape everyday life on your side of The Villages.
